Alex Hammond previews the Champion Stakes at Ascot

Sky Sports Racing presenter Alex Hammond Has a look at the feature race in Ascot on British Champions Day.

Sky Sports Racing covering are seen by this Saturday and I am delighted to be there. A card is , but Im going to focus on the large one here. It has been well documented that this race is one of three run to the (internal ) obstacle monitor, but that usually means the ground will not be as testing as first feared. Having said that, a love of gentle earth is essential.
William Haggas five-year-old was well beaten in this meeting 12 months ago in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, but that had been his very first run since May of that year as he didnt receive the earth he favors. He has been busier this year and he hasnt done a excellent deal whilst he was disappointing at the Huxley Stakes back in May. He beat Magic Wand to win against the Wolferton in June, finished a respectable second to Elarqam in York then beat Pondus in thick ground out time. So far however, he has come in the maximum level and the ground might not be analyzing sufficient to level the playing area with some of his rivals.
He has a small quirk, although theres no uncertainty Sir Michael Stoutes four-year-old has plenty of ability. If he desires the floor soft is up for debate, although a quarter and this mile is the best trip. Requirements are possibly the least of the troubles, on his day that he can give all these a real fright and there is an opportunity that with age comes more adulthood, so none to write away, but we might not observe the very top of him before next year with a bit more experience under his belt.
This elegant mare finally got a pleasant Group 1 success to her name in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in June and only like buses, she subsequently made it 2 at the highest level with a win at the Prix Jean Romanet in Deauville a month or two ago on her most recent start. She was desperately unlucky not to reel at Magical at the Champion Fillies and Mares on this card this past year and I think she is well capable of earning it a hat-trick of Group 1s in conditions that are right up her street together with Mr Ascot, Frankie Dettori in the saddle.
Japans sweetheart showed she could cut it against some of the greatest females in Europe when winning the Nassau at Goodwood and is unlucky not to have potentially ripped two European Group 1s when denied success in the Irish Champion Stakes when obtaining no sort of run. Shes been prices each time shes put foot on the street in the UK and Ireland, but shouldnt be overlooked at the Champion Stakes in which she appears capable of making her presence felt once again. The negative needs to be the floor as she appears to be more effective.
Aidan OBriens second string looks like playing a role to her fancied stablemate Magical that is better. The excursion stretches her, with her very best efforts more than a mile and seven furlongs. Having said that, she ran her life in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes race 12 weeks after beaten a neck to next by Roaring Lion, but was a mile plus anything hasnt replicated since.
What a super mare she is. She has enjoyed every dance this year finishing out of the two since her triumph at the Fillies and Mares with this card last year. This came last time out when fifth in the Prix de lArc de Triomphe which wasnt a bad attempt by any way. She is unfortunate as she has completed in the highest level in the previous 12 months to be around in exactly the same time as Enable, but there is no Permit in this and shes a excellent likelihood of winning once more. Shes tough and incredibly talented, although there would have to be a concern about the times shes laid herself online this season. Requirements will hold no fears for her .
Ithink that he could step up to the plate as well as a leading light in the stable as a four-year-old next season of Andrew Balding andm a massive fan of Fox Tal. Last month, he also pulverised his rivals in a Conditions Stakes at Doncasters St Leger meeting and I think hes got the makings of a class colt, whilst he has plenty to prove at this level. The ground is really a complete unknown, however he has family that went on soft, so that wont discourages me. Hes a large participant for me.
He has a lot to do on evaluations, but what he can have in his favour would be your ground. He yells when conditions are similar to this. The excursion suits him well, if he is good enough to ruffle a few of these feathers, but Id be amazed.
This filly looked very smart to be honest she has not done a wonderful deal incorrect since then and after winning back the Cheshire Oaks in May. The Oaks was a shambles for her and that I thought she was unlucky not to win the Nassau Stakes. You may set a line through her run at ParisLongchamp at the Prix de lOpera the day as a whole just did not pan out well for Frankie Dettori and as she had been way too keen. She will appreciate conditions and John Gosden is given a good string to his bow by her.
It is likely it will not be soft enough for him, although addeybb is a mud lover that is confirmed. Would be the duo; CORONET and MEHDAAYIH of John Gosden. Coronet has come into her own this year and was a touch unlucky from the Fillies and Mares on this day last year behind winner Magical. Its interesting theyve opted to go for this race instead of the Fillies and Mares again and she is in the kind of her life.
Mehdaayih is just another filly I like and you are able to set a line through her conduct at ParisLongchamp on Arc since she pulled too hard daily and she seems significance to me in this. Shes done very wrong other and if she has not gone across the top for this period can run another race. In addition, I believe a massive race cans run . It is guaranteed to be a cracking contest.
